Milkweed Monarchs and More
The milkweed community is a stage for a season-long series of dramas involving a cast of fascinating characters. The Milkweed, Monarchs, and More field guides support the exploration of the milkweed patch and invite you to observe the complex interdependence of life on our planet.
In 2003, the first edition of Milkweed, Monarchs and More, A Field Guide to the Invertebrate Community in the Milkweed Patch became the first field guide to document a natural community. It covered the basics of classification, natural habitats and communities; the unique structure of milkweed flowers; arthropod life cycles and body parts; and the identification of hundreds of inhabitants of the milkweed patch. It was created to help the citizen scientists participating in the Monarch Larva Monitoring Program understand what they were seeing in milkweed patches across North America and collect data to help document the population dynamics of the monarch butterfly. Milkweed, Monarchs, and More quickly found their way into classrooms, homes, and nature centers. It is now in its second edition and available in two sizes.
Both sizes feature:
• Over 300 full-color photos.• Entries on insects and spiders at the order and family levels—including photos of representative individuals, scientific and common names, identifying features, life cycles, sizes, and ranges.• Color-coded symbols indicating the animals’ roles in the milkweed community.• An overview of insect and arachnid body structures.• Explanations of terms and concepts helpful in organizing and sharing observations.• An overview of unique features of the milkweed family—including photos, range, and identifying features for 16 of the 110 species found in North America.• Explanations of terms and concepts helpful in organizing and sharing observations and references.
The Enlarged and Updated Second Edition of Milkweed, Monarchs and More
In 2010, we created The Enlarged and Updated Second Edition of Milkweed, Monarchs, and More with larger type and pictures in response to requests for a larger format. It is more classroom friendly for student reports and easier on older eyes. We also updated many of the sections and added more milkweed species.

Milkweed, Monarchs and More, A Field Guide to the Invertebrate Community in the Milkweed Patch Updated Second Edition, Field Version
In 2011, we published Milkweed, Monarchs and More, A Field Guide to the Invertebrate Community in the Milkweed Patch Updated Second Edition, Field Version. The new book has all the updates we put in the Enlarged Version, plus a few more adjustments to the changing understandings of science. At 4.75" X 7" it is still small, but slightly larger than the original, and there are a few more pages, allowing space for the expanded entries and to make some of the images a little larger.ISBN# 0-965-7472-6-4Milkweed, Monarchs and More, UpdatedSeond Edition, Field Versionby Ba Rea, Karen Oberhauser, and Michael A. Learning from Monarchs
There are as many ways to use monarchs in the classroom as there are teachers interested in giving them a try. Monarchs offer a compelling introduction to insect life cycles, the intricacies of ecosystems and food webs, and the balance of nature. They can be the focus of a profound inquiry science project, complete with math and graphing skills, which can connect students with an international community of citizen scientists. They can also be an exciting journaling theme, a catalyst for understanding geography and human culture, a dynamic study in ethics, and a wonderful subject for art and design. Learning from Monarchs is intended as a starting point for teachers interested in using monarchs in their classrooms. It introduces concepts and information that will be useful as you design your monarch lessons.

Monarch Come Play with Me and ¡Monarca Ven! Juega Conmigo
Monarch Come Play with Me was named one of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Best Books of 2006(SB&F list)
Monarch Come Play with Me, by Ba Rea, uses large, detailed illustrations and the inquiries of a young girl to present a monarch caterpillar’s metamorphosis from egg through caterpillar and chrysalis to butterfly for a pre-k through 3rd grade audience. An informational text at the end of the book introduces readers to monarch science through Fred and Norah Urquhart’s discovery—with the help of many citizen scientists—of the monarchs’ overwintering sites in Mexico. This book is also available in Spanish as ¡Monarca Ven! Juega Conmigo.
Perhaps the best way to excite young children about science, nature and conservation is to foster their personal connections with organisms in the natural world. This story follows a young girl as she gets to know a monarch during its amazing metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult butterfly. As she compares her own growth and activities to those of the monarch, she learns to love it and then let it go. The delightful illustrations and simple text will enchant young children and adults alike. —Dr. Karen Oberhauser, Director of Monarchs in the Classroom
